John Mack and Barbara Gerlach Update 12-05-07

Posted December 5th, 2007

The Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree, Conference Minister for the Connecticut Conference UCC, has shared this good news with us:

“I have received word directly from Barbara that things are looking up. John is in ICU where he will remain for the next 4 to 5 days and will then move to a private room. He is enough better that he is eager to sit up, but the doctors have told him he needs to get his blood more oxygenated before he tries such a thing (he is also talking about going home!)

“Barbara has found another US woman whose husband had heart surgery at the hospital (because their insurance here wouldn’t pay for it, and it cost $70,000 less there!)They are both staying at a guest house, traveling back and forth together, and her new friend has been a big help to getting Barbara oriented.

“She is hoping they might be home by Christmas but is not counting on that.”

Davida also offers this, from an email from Barbara: “It’s been a bit of a nightmare — helicopter out of Everest area to Kathmandu a week ago Sunday. An excellent travel clinic, but the complexity of high altitude pulmonary edema and pneumonia led to ICU at the best hospital in Kathmandu for 5 days. They did the best they could with the resources they had. We are so glad we made the decision to come to New Delhi by air ambulance on Sunday. John is getting excellent care. It will be a very slow process, but it no longer feels life-threatening.”

We continue to covet your prayers for John and Barbara and their family.
