Sermon: The Flight Into Egypt

Posted December 31st, 2007

Preached by the Rev. Douglas Clark
December 30, 2007

A few of my favorite things about the religious aspects of the Christmas season are candlelit windows, Christmas carols, Christmas pageants, and nativity scenes. The tradition of candles in the windows, according to something I remember reading a number of years ago, goes back to a time in northern Ireland when Catholics were persecuted by Protestants. Catholic families would
put a candle in the window as a sign that they would like the priest to visit them and bring communion to them at Christmastime. When they were asked by the Protestant authorities what the candles were about, they answered that the light in the window was a sign of hospitality for the Holy Family: if Joseph and Mary were looking for a place to stay with their baby, they were welcome in a home where a candle burned in the window.
