Sermon – The Rev. Anne Troy, Executive Director of the Shaw Community Ministries, is a lawyer who serves as Assistant General Counsel for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Liability in the federal government. She was ordained in 2004 after completing a MDiv from Wesley Seminary. Rev. Troy holds standing in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
The Shaw Community Ministry has been blessed with her leadership since 2008. During that time, the Ministry has grown financially and programmatically. It now has after-school programs for 40 youth. The organization has offices in the Lincoln-Westmoreland Housing Apartment Complex in the Shaw neighborhood.
We welcome her to our pulpit and look forward to her message of the power of the Spirit and the wondrous grace of God.
Dance Leader – Koquice Spencer, directs the After School Program for SCM.
Since becoming the PD for the SCM afterschool program, she has breathed new life into this program with her enthusiasm and energy. Ms. Spencer creates individual learning plans for each student, maintains a firm, two-way connection with the local school principals and counselors, rewards youth with her incentive program, insists upon parental involvement, and makes home visits.
As part of the after school program, Ms Spencer directs 2 dance groups: one of boys and the other girls. We are blessed to have Ms Spencer and her dancers here to lead us in worship this afternoon.
Guest Violinist: Emily Moore is a free lance musician in the Los Angeles area. She studied at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and at Berkeley School of Music in Boston. Emily composes, teaches, and records when she is not gigging. Emily’s mother, Bonnie Hardy, does not think “gigging” is a word let alone a steady job.
Worship Leader: Rev. Bonnie Hardy’s first career was as a public school teacher and music educator. She is currently writing her dissertation on “Child-Spirit” as well as volunteering at the Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage at the Washington National Cathedral. Bonnie is a member of Spiritual Director’s International, with a private practice as a spiritual director. She also writes church educational curriculum for Pilgrim Press.
Bonnie lives with her husband, Navy Chaplain Bill Middleton, in Alexandria, VA. They have a blended family which includes six children, two dogs, and five feral cats.
